Girdham Clarke was born in Lincoln in 1885 (Cambridge Q1-1897 3B:484), son of Edward Blackshaw and Fanny CLARKE (née WATSON).
1891 census...Aged 6, he was at The Reindeer, High Street, Navenby, Lincoln with his father Edward B CLARKE [39] licensed victualler, born Navenby; his mother Fanny [41] born Metheringham, Somerset; brothers Mason [15], Watson [14] and Sydney [9] (all born in Lincoln); sisters Elizabeth [10] born Lincoln, Hannah [4] and Fanny [2], both born in Navenby. 1901 census...Aged 16, an apprentice tailor, he was boarding with Edward and Sarah J RABY at Church Lane, Navenby. Edward Raby was a tailor and local preacher. 1911 census...Aged 26, a master tailor, he was boarding at Brook Street, Soham with Henry and Harriet CROSSMAN. In 1912 Q3 he married Elizabeth Evelyn JACKSON [31-10-1885] in Soham. They lived at Nightingale Villa, Clay Street, Soham. They had one son Thomas Stanley [12-12-1912-to-1963] As ever, CLARK is variously with or with the 'E' ending. |

He enlisted in Newmarket, whilst resident in Soham. His Army records have not been found so we do not know the cause of his death in hospital in Manchester. As he died in UK there is even less chance of finding where he was last serving in Europe.
